What does 가봤어요 mean?

가봤어요 means "Went there and actually tried it." in Korean.

How it works here

In V-아/어 보다, 보다 adds the meaning of having personally tried or experienced an action. 가봤어요 combines 가다 (to go) with -아 보다, the past tense, and a polite ending to ask about actual experience of going.

Key expression

-아/어 보다

Indicates having actually tried an action; used to ask or talk about experience.

Attach ‘-아/어 보다’ to a verb, as in 해보다, 먹어보다, or 만나보다. Here, ‘보다’ means trying or experiencing something, not simply seeing it. The past form 봤어요 is especially common.

When it's used

Used to ask whether someone has tried or experienced an action before.

The line

둘이 같이 해외여행 가봤어요?

Have the two of you ever traveled abroad together?

The speaker casually asks whether the listener has experienced an activity.
