What does 가야 되 mean?

가야 되 means "have to go" in Korean.

How it works here

‘-아/어야 되다’ is added to ‘가다’ to express that going is necessary. With the declarative ending ‘-잖아요’, it sounds like the speaker is confirming something already obvious or expected.

Key expression

-아/어야 되다

An expression meaning that something must be done; it indicates necessity or obligation.

This expression is very common in spoken language. A present-tense verb usually comes before it, followed by 돼요/돼, contracted forms of 되다. It is more everyday and softer than the similar ‘-아/어야 하다’. Do not confuse it with ‘-아/어도 되다’, which expresses permission.

When it's used

Use ‘-아/어야 되다’ when an action is necessary because it cannot be avoided or because of a required procedure.

The line

또 가야 되잖아요, 여기가 어디야?

We have to go again, you know. Where is this place?

This is said when someone has to find the way there again but first needs to check something.
